School and Student Fees

W.R. Myers High School recognizes the importance of both curricular and extracurricular opportunities in fostering a positive school culture and promoting student well-being. Many of these programs include associated costs. In accordance with Horizon School Division Policy HIAE, student fees may be collected to support the delivery of high-quality programming and to ensure the sustainability of optional activities.

Types of Fees Collected at WR Myers

As per Division Policy HIAE, W.R. Myers may collect the following categories of student fees:

  • Extracurricular / Athletic Fees
Fees collected for participation in activities such as school sports teams, after-school clubs, and other non-curricular student experiences. These activities are voluntary and not tied directly to the Alberta Program of Studies.
  • Option Course Fees
Fees associated with specific option courses that incur additional material or supply costs beyond what is typical in core subjects. Courses that may include fees include (but are not limited to) Art, Foods, and Shop. Option course fees are communicated to families on an annual basis.
  • Technology Fees
Annual fees used to support student access to school-owned devices, including Chromebooks and computer labs, as well as ongoing maintenance and updates of technology infrastructure.
  • Non-Curricular Student Service Fees
Fees that support student-related services or school-wide events, such as:
    • Students’ Union Fees, which contribute to school spirit initiatives, student clothing, or community-building events (e.g., Last Class Bash).
    • Graduation Fees, which contribute to the cost of planning and hosting the Grade 12 graduation ceremony and related events.

Note: All fees must be communicated to parents/guardians in advance of the activity or service. Annual fees must be submitted to Horizon School Division and approved per the timelines outlined in Division Policy HIAE.

In the event that a fee-based event or activity is cancelled, fees will be refunded in full.

Important: The ability or inability to pay school fees will not impact a student’s ability to earn course credits or achieve a high school diploma.

Payment of Fees

Parents/guardians are encouraged to submit payment prior to the start of the associated activity or course, whenever possible.

If needed, families are encouraged to contact the school office to arrange a payment plan to facilitate student participation.

It is the responsibility of both the student and parent/guardian to review and understand the fees associated with a course or activity before registering.

Accepted payment methods include:

  • Cash
  • Cheque
  • Debit/credit
  • Online payment via School Cash Online

Invoices for outstanding fees will be sent to parents/guardians quarterly.

Fee Waivers

In alignment with Policy HIAE, fee waivers may be granted in exceptional circumstances where financial hardship is demonstrated.

  • Option and technology fee waiver applications must be submitted to Horizon School Division using the division's official fee waiver application process (see Appendix: Waiver).
  • Extracurricular or athletic fee waivers may be submitted directly to the school principal for consideration.

All waiver requests will be reviewed confidentially, and efforts will be made to ensure equitable access to programming.

Non-Payment of Fees

In cases of outstanding student fees, the following steps may be taken:

  • Written notification from the school regarding unpaid fees.
  • Referral to Horizon School Division for further communication.
  • In exceptional cases, outstanding accounts may be forwarded to a collection agency.

For extracurricular activities, unpaid fees from previous participation may result in restricted access to future extracurricular involvement until:

  • The outstanding balance is paid, or
  • A payment plan is established and remains in good standing.

Examples:

  • A student with unpaid volleyball fees will be ineligible to participate on basketball or other athletic teams until the balance is resolved.
  • A student with unpaid E-Sports club fees from a previous year will not be permitted to register for the club in the current year until the outstanding amount is addressed.
